Are the Destiny 2 servers down? Is there an issue with the servers?
It’s important to note that Destiny 2 is a game that requires a constant internet connection, and without the servers, the game will not work.
Here’s the latest information on the current status of the Destiny 2 servers and whether or not they are down.
Is Destiny 2 down?
Currently, there are no planned or unplanned downtimes for Destiny 2. However, developer Bungie occasionally temporarily shuts down its servers a few hours before an update to process them in preparation for a larger patch. These server shutdowns usually occur before significant events, the start of new seasons, the release of expansion packs, or mid-season patches the team pushes to the server.
To confirm whether you are the only player experiencing any issues, it’s recommended to check for scheduled extended maintenance days using Destiny 2’s Downside Explorer or the Bungie help pages. Additionally, we encourage you to visit the Bungie Help Twitter page and follow them to stay updated on these maintenance periods.
These maintenance windows are also an excellent opportunity to ensure that the issue is not exclusive to your gameplay. Fortunately, Bungie tends to follow a consistent pattern, and if the servers do go down, they are usually restored within a few hours.
Why are the servers down in Destiny 2?
Destiny 2 servers occasionally shut down for several reasons. Most of the time, they are turned off on purpose, either for maintenance or before a massive update to the game, like Lightfall.
Typically, scheduled maintenance takes no more than a few hours, but servers are often down for 24 hours before new expansions. There may be other reasons (such as technical failures) that caused the server to be down. These are less predictable than planned closures, but thankfully, these are rare.
Regardless of how or why the server is down, the only thing we can do is wait. If you’re eager to get back online, you can usually follow the Destiny 2 server status Twitter account.
