More and more games become Free-to-play model. Firstly, it is the Lord of the Rings Online, then EverQuest II and Age of Conan etc . They are all the examples of successful transitions, therefore, getting more players. Perhaps, Free-to-play model is the tendency in the future. And now, it is turn to Aion.

NCsoft's Aion

Like many other MMOs before it, NCsoft's Aion will transition to a free-to-play payment model in February 2012. For now this applies only to Europe. When the switch occurs, there will be no charge for registering and downloading the client, and all classes, regions and instances will be available to non-paying players.

There will still be options to pay, however, which you can find listed on Aion's official site. Publisher Gameforge will partner in publishing the free version, helping out with new servers and support of the game.
