7 Tips & Tricks for FIFA 14

Since its release on September 27, FIFA 14 has gone on to become one of this year’s biggest-selling video games.

That’s no mean feat, either, considering it has had to contend with the insanely popular Grand Theft Auto V in the UK sales charts over the last two months, even toppling Rockstar’s title at one stage.

Here, we lend a helping hand by going through the Top 7 Tips & Tricks for FIFA 14.

7 Tips & Tricks

Take Heed Of The Practice Mode

The practice mode in FIFA 14 isn’t just a good way to kill time waiting for a match to load ahead of kick off. It’s also a useful tool of which to hone your craft with; from penalties, freekicks, crossing and passing, practice mode will help you refine all the skills you need to become a FIFA maestro.

It will teach you how to bend the ball around a wall of players, how to aim and direct your penalties and passes, and there’s some good old fashioned goofing around thrown in, such as getting the ball inside upturned bins and knocking down boxes.

If you pay enough attention to practice mode, you may well learn a thing or two.

Buy Sensibly In The Transfer Market

The in-game transfer window isn’t just there to lend FIFA 14’er mode more realism.

You can also use it to buy and sell certain players, and get rid of the deadwood who’s lower ratings may well cost you dearly in the crunch matches.

Every player has a value – some are more expensive than others, much like in real life, but the trick is negotiating, even when you know you’re offering a knock-down fee for a star player.

FIFA 14 Tips

Chancing your arm by offering slightly less than the market value can sometimes land you a bargain, and if you’re on the receiving end of a transfer offer, you can click “decline all future offers” in order to avoid wading through repetitive emails inquiring about a player you definitely don’t want to lose.

Patience Is The Key

FIFA 14 has come in for criticism in the months since its release over how slow and sluggish it feels, with packed defences thwarting your attackers and boring, bogged-down midfield battles.

If you’re just starting up, or playing on one of the slightly higher difficulty settings, you’ll probably find you’ll encounter more than a few 0-0 and 1-0 results.

This can be frustrating, particularly when you’re trying to sprint with the ball only to find you’re dragging weights, and it can be annoying when stubborn defences refuse to give you even a yard of space to fire off a shot or cross.

The key is to exercise patience; wait to pick out that key pass when the opposition becomes fatigued and unlock their defence. Passing it around in midfield Barcelona-style and waiting for your opportunity can pay off.

Legacy vs Tactical Defending

In recent years, EA have introduced “tactical defending”, a default setting that has replaced the old ‘legacy’ system and requires the player to perfect their timing before making a challenge, as opposed to holding down O and waiting for the AI to automatically stick a foot in.

If you’re the sort of player who enjoys realism, and likes to be challenged by opposing attackers, tactical defending is a good feature. However, for those who can’t quite seem to grasp it, you can also head on over to the options menu and select ‘legacy defending’ to make your fullback’s lives just that little bit easier.

 Dummy Your Penalties

If ever you’re in a position where you’re taking a penalty, this tip could come in handy.
You’ve just been upended in the box, the referee points to the spot, and up steps the penalty taker. At this stage, you have a variety of options. Hit it hard and low, and aim for the corner, or try to thump it down the middle or into the top corner.

Alternatively, you can also dummy your run, and fool the keeper into diving early before notching it into the opposite corner at the last minute.

Increase The Game Speed

Considering how slow FIFA 14 is, with players seeming as though they’re wading through a river of treacle, this tip can also make your FIFA experience just that little bit more enjoyable.

If you’re finding that the pace of the game is too sluggish for you, as with legacy defending, you can head on over to the options menu and move a slider up or down to dictate the tempo of your matches.

Thanks to the options menu, you can pretty much tailor ’14 the way you want it to be played, from how you tackle through to how fast you run. Take advantage of this if the default settings aren’t to your tastes.

Celebrate In Style

FIFA 14

Having hopefully improved your FIFA skills and found the back of the net with a 20 yard screamer, you’re going to want to know how to celebrate.

You can go down the generic fist-pump route, or you can learn one of the real-life, player-specific celebrations added by EA, such as Daniel Sturridge’s ‘riding the wave’ (above) and even Mario Balotelli’s ‘why always me?’.
