Darkfall Unholy Wars Overview

Darkfall Unholy Wars is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Aventurine SA. It was announced on 18 September and is a sequel to Darkfall. It's a PvP MMORPG where players are encouraged to form clans and battle for dominance across Agon, the fantasy world in which the game takes place.

Darkfall Unholy Wars

Darkfall Unholy Wars is a hardcore PvP sandbox MMO.

Instead of quests, you complete “feats”, which generally call for you to grind something – this can be monsters or crafting, then grant points (prowess) you can spend on character advancement upon completion.  There is no set path for the feats in that, you can complete them in any order you like.  You aren’t told by NPC’s where to go next –  you kinda have to work it out yourself.  The more of the map you explore, the more spawn points (for monsters, towns, clan holdings, etc) you will discover and the easier it will be to find your way around or try to work out which of the spawn points are safer to farm than others.

Skirmisher in DUW

Class System

There are only 4 classes in the game: Warrior, Skirmisher (archer), Elementalist (mage class) and Primalist (healing/support class).  However, you can change your class so you’re not bound by your original choice. One thing you cannot do at the moment, however, is reset your prowess points so you need to have some idea of what you’re aiming for.

The character progression system in Darkfall Unholy Wars is based on prowess. Prowess can be gained from any game interaction. The amount of prowess that a player gains depends on the difficulty or rarity of each achievement. It can be used as a form of currency to acquire different skills and boosters while spending prowess is the only way to improve the character's attributes, combat, and harvesting skills.

PVP and PVE

PvP is very clearly the focus of the game, but in order to get to a standard that you can PVP, a lot of PVE is required. This might instantly put a lot of people off, but the PVE is pretty fun and the monsters/mobs are very interactive in that, they’ll dodge, they’ll flee, they’ll even line-of-sight you in some cases. Getting used to the specialised combat system in Darkfall means you will probably be thankful for the masses of PVE you have to do in order to practice getting it right.

You can avoid player combat by hanging around the starter cities and safe zones, but all the good loot and adventure is out in unsafe territory and you’ll find that it’s a lot harder to get past a certain level of prowess after a while. Also, when you die you drop everything you were carrying and other players can loot your corpse, so there is definitely high risk to Darkfall’s PvP. Most players will keep a few spare sets of gear in their bank to re-equip upon death.

Crafting

Most of the gear worth using in Darkfall, is crafted by players. You can do a lot of it semi-AFK which means you can do it while completing monotonous household tasks such as cleaning and cooking. A few people like this aspect of the game, while it might seem  ”grindy” to some, the fact that you can do most of it semi-afk (you probably don’t want to AFK in the PVP zones), is a major.
